Bad Roads
(assistant director)

Directed by Vicky Featherstone
November 2017 Royal Court Theatre

Bad Roads was a production set in Ukraine following different women as they live through a horrendous war. It explored dark humour, love, lust and the never-ending fear of death. As an assistant, my main role was to research and try to bring as much of the text alive into the room. I also took notes for the actors and supported Vicky in ensuring she had everything she needed for rehearsals.

Bad Roads was an exciting project to be on because I worked closely with Vicky Featherstone who is an inspirational woman, not just as a director but as an advocate for women in general. Assisting in rehearsals showed me how significant the first week of rehearsals is. I was able to observe the actors explore the text with the writer present to answer questions. The openness of Natal’ya Vorozhbit really allowed me to understand how valuable the writer-director relationship is. It was mesmerising to watch the characters come to life week after week. This production opened my eyes to how effective lighting is to create a sinister atmosphere. At the moment I am a member of the Royal Court Young Agitator scheme.
