Work with young people

As a creative facilitator, I have worked with Company Three, Coney and The Yard Theatre.

I currently lead weekly sessions for Eritrean Youth Club, an organisation which runs a range of activities for young people of Eritrean heritage. We have touched upon writing, monologue work, devising, traditional dance. Each term they perform a work in progress to present to parents and friends. Eritrean Youth Club provides a range of programmes’ designed to allow young people to explore new activities and grow their community network, to allow them to reach their full potential.

In September 2019 they took part in the London Car Free day parade coordinated by Mayor Sadiq Khan. They curated an informative yet uplifting piece about climate change, encouraging the audience to reduce their carbon footprint. Our recent performance was at Camden People’s Theatre. Called Nightmare Before Christmas, it was a Christmas production that the children devised to portray their love for friends and family. I try to ensure that their talents such as rapping, singing and gymnastics are celebrated when possible.

Leading regular workshops has forced me to think about my practice and what’s important depending on whom I’m collaborating with. I lead a group with a broad age range which means I have to adapt my delivery to cover different needs and abilities in the room. However, I have been determined to create an atmosphere of fun as well as learning, creating and building.
